Stage 2

Film and television play a central role in children’s lives and cultural understanding. Children love sharing the experience of watching films. This INSET helps teachers to exploit the rich learning potentials films have in relation to literacy. It offers practical ideas for using short films as texts to develop literacy and demonstrates how enjoyable and highly effective exploring film and film language can be in teaching aspects of literacy. STORY SHORTS offers Primary teachers a rationale for working with moving-image media in the classroom to promote the development of literacy skills. It will show how short films can be used to support speaking, listening, reading and writing by focussing on character, narrative and setting.

“I feel so much clearer in this area now, to the extent of delivering to the rest of my staff” (previous INSET attender).
